Q&A - Gordon Harritt AKA In-house Cinema Guru

We caught up with Gordon, one of the key members of our Cinema & Theatre team…

So, who are you?
I’m Gordon, 32, Letchworth born and bred.

What’s your role at Broadway Cinema & Theatre?
I’m 1 of 3 Duty Managers. My job is to run the building, such as opening & closing up. My secondary job is to arrange the film scheduling, making sure we are screening the best movies and delivering a diverse range of content.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Film scheduling, it allows me to be creative.

Top 3 favourite films?
“Manhunter” (1986)
“Sorcerer” (1977)
“Once Upon a Time in the West” (1968)

Top 3 worst films?
Kill Bill, Fight Club & Citizen Kane…not necessarily terrible films, I just don’t get the hype/love for them!

What was the first film you saw at the cinema?
First film was Disney’s “Snow White”. I must have been about 4 years old, I vividly remember watching it with my parents.

Favourite director?
I can’t pick just one! Really it would have to be either; Michael Mann, William Friedkin, Christopher Nolan or Sergio Leone. All masters of their trade.

What is the film you’ve re-watched the most?
“Return of the Jedi”, as a kid I used to watch it every time I visited my Nan.

Film that should have had a sequel?
“Dredd”, the 2012 version. A great adaptation, unfortunately a sequel will almost certainly never come to fruition.

Film that you wish didn’t have a sequel?
“Terminator 1” & “2” are perfect and should have remained like that. We now have to live in a world where “3”, “Salvation” and “Genysis” exist!

Favourite screen at the Broadway?
Screen 1 is clearly the best. I always sit in the same seat (C18).

Guilty pleasure film?
Easy, “Troll 2”. It’s truly terrible but equally fantastic…check it out on Netflix.

Where do you see cinema in 5 years?
4DX will be about, along with 3D and other gimmicks. The real progression will be with picture and sound quality.

Can you share a memorable experience from your time here?
My first shift, August 6th 2003.

A supervisor at the time called Dan explained what my job would be for the day. I was to be in charge of screen 3, making sure it was clean after each film. I also had to sit through whatever happened to be playing that day.
So on my first shift I was made to watch “Legally Blonde 2” three times in a row.  How I made it to a second day I will never know.

Sweet or salted popcorn?
Neither - after 14 years I can’t stand the smell of popcorn!

Thanks Gordon! We’re very glad you decided to stay after “Legally Blonde 2”.
