Maria Meyer is a multi-disciplinary artist in the final year of the Fine Art MA at The University of Hertfordshire. After graduating from a BA in Fine Art at Middlesex University, Meyer went on to follow a career in graphic design and advertising in London. Later a move from London to St Albans to start a family gave her the time to return to her art practice. Her current work draws from the historical medium of collage and Cubism, but is characterised by a digital aesthetic, influenced by the visual language of product advertising and online media. Meyer’s practice explores the agency of objects and the values we ascribe to them. Through the Juxtaposition of often unrelated ‘things’, the photographs challenge the viewer to decode their meaning and narratives, mirroring the way in which we make connections and decipher images online. Meyer has shown in group exhibitions at local galleries and museums, and sells work to international collectors online.
“ I feel very honoured and humbled to receive Letchworth Open Curators Choice Award. Being included in The Letchworth Open has been a real boost to the artists in the area, especially in the current pandemic situation. On a personal level it has been great to feel part of the growing art scene in the Letchworth area and the support network of other participating artists.
Receiving the award has given me the confidence and financial support to take my practice to the next level. The bursary will enable me to produce a new body of work for my first solo exhibition, which is a massive milestone that I am very excited about. Also, as an emerging artist, receiving one-to-one mentoring from an industry professional is a fantastic opportunity that I am very much looking forward to. The funding and support that local arts spaces such as the Broadway Studio + Gallery provide are the lifeblood of the local arts communities and artists such as myself.”
