Hansel & Gretel
The words of international poet Simon Armitage retell the famous story in an extended lyrical poem entwined with chamber music by composer Matthew Kaner, one of the most original voices of his generation. Shadowplay and animations designed by renowned artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins combine with table top-puppets created by the legendary Jan Zalud.
Hansel & Gretel presents a hauntingly evocative collection of art-forms, drawing audiences into an uneasy yet curiously familiar landscape where glittering sugar-highs combine with poignant lyricism. The music features an unusual dark-hued collective of viola, cello, cor anglais, clarinet, horn and the eerie childhood sounds of toy pianos, led by the remarkable story-teller and singer Adey Grummet.
Suitable for ages 12+
“In this striking modern update, set to words by Simon Armitage and music by Matthew Kaner, the children are refugees and the fairytale is a nightmare.” ★★★★ The Guardian. Read full review >>
“This familiar text has been reimagined as a narration peppered with virtuosic wordplay and black humour” The Times
“An extraordinary piece of theatre”
“A strong, dark, modern take on Hansel & Gretel… beautiful work”
“I am still carrying those two kids with me today… a wonderfully intricate weaving of sound and image.”
“We thought it was excellent! Every part worked so well together. The kids were amazed by the whole thing and thought the puppets were so lifelike that they were quite scary. We all really enjoyed it and were so glad we came.”
