'The promised land', a short film by Dev Delay, a long-term resident of Letchworth Garden City.
The South Asian and Caribbean workers were invited to the United Kingdom in order to bridge the gap in labour shortage after the 2nd World War. A percentage of these immigrants settled in the North Herts area. In particular, Letchworth GC, Baldock and Hitchin on a false promise to better their lives. A few of them share their experiences in this film.
They arrived with high hopes and aspirations but their desired outcomes fell far short of being realised, because they faced hostility and discrimination on daily basis. Returning home was not an option, due to lack of funds available.
However, shared experiences brought them closer, they supported each other as best as they could in finding employment and shelter.
The locals resented their arrival but were happy for their hard labour which contributed to the local and national economy, making Britain Great again.
