Last November, ten of the UK’s leading experts briefed an invited audience of over 1,200 politicians and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and the media. The briefing set out the implications of climate and nature breakdown for health, food systems, national security and the economy.
The People's Emergency Briefing presents the national implications of climate and nature breakdown—along with credible, positive responses—in a single, accessible account. A powerful new film featuring Chris Packham, leading scientists, a former general and Jennifer Saunders offers an unflinching look at where things are heading and, crucially, what can still be done.
We are delighted to welcome an expert panel of guest speakers: Anna Hughes, Tim Lee, Deolinda Eltringham, and Dr Phil Porter.
Anna Hughes is the Director of Flight Free UK. A behaviour change specialist, Anna has campaigned for sustainable transport since 2008, initially working with Sustrans to promote cycling before turning her focus to aviation through Flight Free UK. She has a broad understanding of the climate and biodiversity crisis and is a passionate advocate for reducing aviation emissions. Flight Free UK was established in 2018 following the IPCC's landmark '12-year' report and was inspired by Sweden's Flygfritt (Flight Free) movement. The organisation launched its first annual Flight Free pledge in 2019, encouraging people to take meaningful action by choosing not to fly for a year.
Tim Lee and Deolinda Eltringham are active members of the North Herts & Stevenage Green Party and will explore the vital role that local and national political action can play in responding to the challenges highlighted in the film. They will be joined by Dr Phil Porter, a glacier scientist at the University of Hertfordshire and one of the UK's most experienced Arctic researchers. For over thirty years, Dr Porter has led and participated in scientific expeditions to the High Arctic and the Himalayas, studying how glaciers are responding to our rapidly changing climate. His research provides compelling, first-hand insight into the impacts of global warming and the urgent need for action.
Together, the panel promises an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the science, politics, policy, behaviour change, and practical solutions needed to address the climate emergency.
